Why Cloth?

Cloth is no longer folding pieces of fabric pined and covered with plastic pants. Now a cloth diaper can be as easy to put on as a disposable. Cloth diapers now come with snaps, or velcro closures and come in fun prints and colours. Cloth diapers have come a long way and are no your mamas cloth diapers.

There are many other reasons to cloth diaper, one being it`s better for the environment.

Did you know that according to environment Canada approximately 4 million diapers are thrown away each day in Canada. From birth to potty training the average baby will go through 5000-6000 diapers, and those disposables take approximately 500 years to break down eeeeww! Personally I can`t imagine my own baby leaving that kind of impact on the environment if I have a choice.

There is the argument that cloth diapering is hard on the environment due to the washing and drying process. First off washing cloth diapers uses no more water than the average adult flushing a toilet in a year.
Secondly it`s not recommended you put your diapers in the dryer, you should hang to dry. This is both good for your hydro bill and the environment!

There is also the cost factor. On average disposables cost .20-.30 per diaper depending on brand. Lets do some math:

8 changes a day X .25 = $2.00 per day
$2.00 X 7 days = $14 per week
$14 X 52 weeks = $728 per year
the average potty training age is 2.5 X $728 = $1820
And that number is all dependent on how often you change, what brand you use and how long it takes to potty train your baby.

Cloth:
One of the most cost effective way to cloth diaper is with One-Size diapers. These diapers are designed to fit from birth to potty training.
I carry AMP one-size Duo Pockets which cost $20 each.
To wash every second day you need approximately 18-20 diapers (newborns need approximately 10-12 diaper changes a day where as older babies need 8-10)

$20 X 20 = $400

accessories:
wetbag (store diapers while you are not at home) $10
Inserts: $60
Pail liner: $17
total $487 to cloth diaper from birth to potty. That is a cost difference of $1333 that can go towards many many other things your family needs.

Not only that, cloth diapers can be reused for future children so you can save even more money!

The Gross Factor

I find a lot of parents are discouraged to try cloth diapering because they are afraid it will be gross. I can tell you right now whether in a disposable or cloth poop is poop lol. What is gross is having a disposable blow out and there is gross stuff everywhere!

But what do you do with the poop?
It goes in the toilet, you can either dunk and flush or purchase a diaper sprayer which quickly sprays the poop off.

If you have a pail liner when it comes to wash day all you have to do is take the liner out of the pail, dump the diapers into the washer and away you go. There really isn`t any more contact with soiled diapers than with a disposable!
